What is the difference between Ay, Ahí and Hay in Spanish?
“Hay” “Ahí” “Ay“. We’re going to take a look at three Spanish words that sound very similar when we say them, but these are very different from each other. They all belong to distinct grammatical categories.
Hay in Spanish:
Form of the verb “haber”, which means that something exists in reality or figuratively:
e.g.
Hay días en los que hace mucho calor. (There are days when it is very hot.)
Me dijo ella que hay más papel higiénico – (She told me that there is more toilet paper)
Ahí in spanish:
An adverb (word that normally accompanies verbs) that indicates a place that is near, which see or show.
e.g.
Ahí vive ella. (She lives there.)
¿Quién anda ahí? (Who goes there?)
Ay in Spanish:
An interjection that is used to express moods.
e.g.
¡Ay! ¡Qué ganas tengo triunfar! (Oh, how I want to succeed!)
¡Ay, qué pena! (Oh, What a pity!)
