Time in Spanish

 

 Note: The verb ser” is used to express the time of the day. Use es” when referring to “one o’clock” and use son” when referring to all other hours.

Es la una – It’s one o’clock.
Son 
las cinco – It’s five o’clock.

Note: The feminine article (la, las) is used before the hour because it refers to “la hora”(the hour).

Note: Minutes can be added to the hour using the word y (and).

Es la una y diez.
It’s ten minutes past one.

Son las tres y veinte.
It’s twenty minutes past three.


Note: Minutes can be subtracted from the hour using the word menos (less).

It’s ten minutes till one.

Son las tres menos veinte.
It’s twenty minutes till three.


Note: You can also use the words media (half) and cuarto (quarter).

Es la una y media.
It’s half past one.

Son las dos menos cuarto.
It’s 
quarter till two.

Son las tres y cuarto.
It’s 
quarter past three.


Note: To say something occurs at a specific time, use the formula:

 a + la(s) + time


La clase empieza a las nueve.
The class begins at nine o’clock.

El centro abre a las ocho y media.
The mall opens at eight thirty


Note: To differentiate between a.m. and p.m. use the expressions de la mañana, de la tarde” and ” de la noche

Son las tres de la tarde.
It’s three pm.

Son las cuatro de la mañana.
It’s four am.

Son las once de la noche.
It’s eleven 
pm.


Note: When no specific time is mentioned, use the expressionspor la mañana, por la tarde, por la noche.

Siempre voy a laplaya por la tarde – I always go to the beach in the afternoon (no specific time)

Yo voy al centro por la mañana  I go to the mall in the morning (no specific time)

Iremos al cine por la noche – We will go to the cinema at night (no specific time)
