Spanish Interrogative Words

How to translate the interrogative words in Spanish?. Questions act as generators and organizers of school knowledge. Thus, these awaken our desire to know new things, help us to reflect on our understanding and the learning process.

 ¿Qué?  – (What?)

¿Quién? – (Who?)

¿Dónde? – (Where?)

¿Cuánto?  -(How much/How many?)

¿Cuándo? – (When?)

¿Cuál? – (Which?)

¿Cómo? – (How?)

¿Por qué? – (Why?)

 

 

In Spanish, there may be several ways to ask the same question (Spanish interrogative words)

e.g.    Do you speak Spanish?

¿Hablas tú Español? ¿Tú hablas Español? ¿Hablas Español tú?

 

Possible answers would be:

Sí, yo hablo Español. (Yes, I speak Spanish) No, yo no habla Español. (No, I don’t speak Spanish)

 

Note: Another method of forming questions is to add a tag question to the end of a statement.

e.g.

Tú hablas Español, ¿no? You speak Spanish, don’t you?

Tú hablas Español, ¿verdad? You speak Spanish, right?

Note: Each has a written accent mark. Notice how the subject and verbs are inverted. That is, the subject comes after the verb.

¿Para qué? For what?

 

Note: ¿Dónde? means “Where?” ¿Adónde? means “To where?” Thus, “dónde” asks for a location, while “adónde” asks for a destination. ¿De dónde? means “From where?”

e.g.

¿Dónde está tu casa? – Where is your house? ¿Adónde va tu hermano? – Where is your brother going? ¿De dónde eres? – Where are you from?

 

Note: ¿Cómo? means “How?”

e.g.

¿Cómo estás tú? – How are you?

¿Cómo es ella? – How is she?

Note: ¿Cuál? and ¿Cuáles? mean “What?” or “Which?”

e.g.

¿Cuál es tu nombre?-What is your name? ¿Cuáles son tus canciones favoritas?- What (Which) are your favorite songs?

Note: ¿Cuándo? means “When?”

e.g.

¿Cuándo van al Zoológico? – When are they going to the Zoo? ¿Cuándo estarás ahí?- When will you be there?

 

Note: ¿Cuánto?¿Cuánta?  means “How much?

e.g.

¿Cuánto dinero tienes? – How much money do you have?

¿Cuánto tú me quieres? – How much do you love me?

 

Note: ¿Cuántos?, ¿Cuántas?  means “How many?”

e.g.

¿Cuántas chicos hay? –  How many guys are there? ¿Cuántas libras de arroz? – How many pounds of rice?

 

Note: ¿Qué? means “What?”

e.g.

¿Qué es la felicidad?- What is happiness? ¿Qué haces? – What do you do?

 

Note: ¿De qué? means “About what?” or “Of what?”

e.g.

¿De qué material es la cortina? – What is the curtain made of? ¿De qué habla ella? – What is she talking about?

 

Note:¿Quién?¿Quiénes?  means “Who?”

e.g.

¿Quién es él? – Who is he? ¿Quiénes son ellos? – Who are they?

Note:¿A quién?¿A quiénes?  means “Whom?”

¿A quién  contactaste? – Who did you contact? ¿A quiénes vas a invitar? – Who are you going to invite?

 

Note:¿Con quién?¿Con quiénes? means “With whom?”

e.g.

¿Con quién hablo? – With whom am I speaking? ¿Con quiénes fuiste al centro?-  With whom did you go to the mall?

 

Note:¿De quién?¿De quiénes? means “Whose?”

e.g.

¿De quién es esa ropa? – Whose clothes is that?

¿De quiénes son esos zapatos? – Whose shoes are these?

 

Note:¿Por qué? means “Why? (for what reason)”

e.g.

¿Por qué trabajas tanto?- Why do you work so much?

Possible answer:

Porque necesito comprar una casa. – Because I need to buy a house

 

Note:¿Para qué? means “Why? (for what purpose)”

e.g.

¿Para qué haces eso? – For what purpose do you do that?

Possible answer:

Para aprender más. – In order to learn more.

Note: When used with the verb “ser”, “cuál” and “qué” can both mean “what”. Cuál is more common, and is used to indicate a selection, or choice of possibilities. Qué is used to elicit a definition or an explanation.

e.g.

¿Cuál es tu religion? –  What is your religion?

¿Qué es tu religion? – What is your religion?
